Derailment Risk and Total Strike Threaten Mexico City Metro

The Metro union leader Fernando Espino Arévalo warned of a "permanent risk" of derailment, especially on Line 1, where he claims over 7,000 sleepers are fractured. He also denounced a lack of basic supplies, recurrent failures like "flameouts," and a critical backlog in train maintenance: around 70% of the 391 trains have not undergone major intervention despite exceeding their recommended service life. If a total strike materializes, the impact would be widespread across the capital. On Monday, workers rejected performing overtime in all areas, which significantly reduced the availability of trains. By Wednesday, actions will be intensified with a "work-to-rule" scheme, particularly in technical areas, which could further slow down service. Tension in the Mexico City Metro system could reach its most critical point next Friday, April 17th, if a dialogue table is not established.
